Honeybees

Honeybees are one of the few
Bug species that humans pursue
For the reserves that they hoard,
Though the truth goes ignored:
They’re barfing up nectar they chew.

In her short six-week life, a worker bee will produce 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey. She will visit up to a hundred flowers per nectar-collection trip and return to the hive, where she and up to 60,000 sisters reside. The production of a single pound of honey requires 2 million flower-visits and over 55,000 miles of travel by nearly 800 bees. In addition to copious amounts of communal insect spittle, honey contains all the ingredients required to sustain life. It is also the only natural food known to science that does not spoil.
