Adores the levees near Orleans’ shore;
But in her quarters on base,
With glazed look on her face,
She delights in the dykes even more.
Dyke, used colloquially as a pejorative synonym for lesbian, has been in use for at least a century in the United States. It originally referred to mostly masculine carpet-munchers, but in recent times the lez community has attempted to appropriate the term for themselves, much in the same way “gay” is embraced by male homosexuals.
