The Kims left Korea in ’08
Optimistic they’d assimilate;
But friends had misgivings
At all the Thanksgivings,
When the turkey would bark in its crate.

Dog meat consumption in South Korea is a real phenomenon. According to Wikipedia, somewhere between five and 30 percent of the population have eaten dog at least once. The BBC has been cited as reporting that up to 6,000 restaurants serve dog meat soup that costs around $10. One can get steamed dog meat with rice for about $25. Altogether, it is believed that over 100,000 tons annually are either consumed or used in a tonic known as gaesoju.
Wow.
