Some believe that incest between consenting adults should be decriminalized in a similar fashion to the mainstream acceptance of gay sexual relationships. It may well be the last of the most controversial and entrenched taboos, as even those with quite liberal attitudes find it difficult to relent. Usually the arguments against it, after all the moralizing, end up falling back to the “asymmetrical power relationship” premise, which points to the coercion of the more susceptible party to the sexual advances of the other, even in cases where both parties are adults. Alternatively, the increased likelihood of genetic defects may be the most empirically defensible, but with responsible birth control available, even this argument collapses.
