Only female mosquitoes suck blood—up to three times their body weight—to nourish their up to 300 eggs, which they lay in clusters called rafts. There are more than 3,500 cataloged species. Mosquitoes spend their first ten days as larvae in still water. As adults, most do not venture more than 25 feet off the ground as they meander at a leisurely top speed of 1.5 miles per hour.
