The gold-colored one-dollar Canadian coin introduced in 1987 is colloquially known as the loonie, due to the image of the common loon, a diving bird, on its reverse side. In October, 2022, the Royal Canadian Mint confirmed that a new “loonie,” commemorating the 175th anniversary of Alexander Graham Bell’s birthday, entered circulation.
