Sex acts can be black, white or gray,
A well-traveled path or a byway;
There are conventional forms
That conform with social norms,
And then there’s the brown Hershey Highway.
Hershey Highway refers to anal sex. The colloquialism refers to Hershey, the American candy company that’s made milk chocolate in Pennsylvania for over a hundred years. Perceptions of anal sex have changed with the mainstream awareness, if not general acceptance, of the practice. The ubiquitous appearance in contemporary media has tremendously influenced attitudes. Perhaps modern liberalism hasn’t surpassed that of the ancient Greeks, but certainly what is considered “normal” and “deviant” are constantly being redefined. Still, Christopher Hitchens may have been onto something when he famously said, “The four most overrated things in life are champagne, lobster, anal sex, and picnics.”
